Food Safety Foresight Technical Meeting - Summary Report released

24/11/2023

FAO has published the Summary Report that captures the key conclusions of the recently convened Food Safety Foresight Technical Meeting, which was held from 13-17 November 2023, organized by the FAO Food Safety Foresight Programme in Rome. At the meeting, experts, invited from across different global regions, discussed the food safety issues related to new food sources and production systems (NFPS), specifically plant-based food products, new applications of precision fermentation, and 3D food printing. “Such meetings that bring together participants from across the NFPS ecosystem from competent authorities and academia to the food industry are key to ensure that food safety issues are proactively identified and addressed, thus helping to realize the full potential of this sector,” said Vittorio Fattori.

Apart from food safety, the various social, nutritional, environmental and economic aspects associated with the three NFPS were acknowledged, but detailed discussions were considered beyond the scope of the meeting.

The meeting also had a foresight component to further explore the possible future landscape of NFPS. The NFPS ecosystem is rapidly changing with many new food sources, production systems and processing methods being introduced. “Foresight is an important tool for the food safety community to stay informed about what may be coming our way in terms of food safety implications in this fast-evolving sector,” said Keya Mukherjee.
