Melissa Schumacher es Doctora en Ingeniería con especialidad en Gestión Territorial por la Universidad Técnica de Múnich, Maestra en Urbanismo por la Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña y Licenciada en Arquitectura por la Universidad de las Américas Puebla. De nacionalidad alemana y mexicana, su identidad bicultural ha sido una fuente clave de enriquecimiento tanto en su enfoque profesional como en su perspectiva personal.

A lo largo de su trayectoria académica y profesional, ha publicado trabajos en Latinoamérica y Europa. Es miembro fundador de inLAB: territorio y artefacto urbano, un grupo de trabajo donde ha liderado workshops multidisciplinarios sobre planeación urbana y talleres comunitarios. Asimismo, es cofundadora del Taller Tlalli Amealco y miembro activo de la Asociación Mexicana de Arboricultura. Su investigación y práctica profesional se centran en la gestión territorial, el urbanismo ecosistémico, el desarrollo regenerativo, la vivienda rural indígena y el diseño basado en la comunalidad.

Becaria de Conacyt-DAAD, ha colaborado con la cooperación alemana a través de proyectos financiados por el Año Dual Alemania-México, el DAAD y el Ministerio de Educación e Investigación de Alemania. Actualmente, es investigadora nivel 1 del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores (SNI) en México.

En su rol como docente, Schumacher inspira a las nuevas generaciones de arquitectos a comprometerse profundamente con sus comunidades y su país. Se define como una arquitecta “descalza”, convencida de que el aprendizaje más significativo proviene del contacto directo con la tierra y las personas. Esta filosofía le valió el reconocimiento del Senado de la República en 2023 por sus contribuciones al fortalecimiento comunitario y la conservación del paisaje en Cuetzalan, Puebla.

Desde 2016, se desempeña como profesora e investigadora de tiempo completo en el Departamento de Arquitectura de la Escuela de Artes y Humanidades de la Universidad de las Américas Puebla. Además, por pura pasión, está cursando una segunda licenciatura en Antropología, demostrando su incansable curiosidad por comprender la interrelación entre cultura, territorio y sociedad.

Melissa Schumacher holds a Doctorate in Engineering focused on Land Management from the Technical University of Munich, a Master’s in Urbanism from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, and a Bachelor’s in Architecture from the Universidad de las Américas Puebla. With both German and Mexican nationalities, her bicultural identity has significantly enriched both her professional and personal perspectives.

Throughout her academic and professional career, her work has been published in Latin America and Europe. She is a founding member of inLAB: territory and urban artifact, a working group where she has led multidisciplinary workshops on urban planning and community-based projects. Additionally, she is co-founder of Taller Tlalli Amealco and an active member of the Mexican Arboriculture Association. Her research and professional practice focus on territorial management, ecosystemic urbanism, regenerative development, indigenous rural housing, and design rooted in communal practices.

A Conacyt-DAAD scholarship recipient, she has collaborated with German cooperation agencies through projects funded by the Germany-Mexico Dual Year, the DAAD, and the German Ministry of Education and Research. Currently, she is a Level 1 researcher in Mexico’s National System of Researchers (SNI).

As a professor, Schumacher inspires new generations of architects to deeply engage with their communities and country. She identifies as a “barefoot architect,” convinced that the most valuable learning comes from direct contact with the land and its people. This philosophy earned her recognition from the Senate of the Republic in 2023 for her contributions to community strengthening and landscape preservation in Cuetzalan, Puebla.

Since 2016, she has been a full-time professor and researcher in the Department of Architecture at the School of Arts and Humanities of the Universidad de las Américas Puebla. Additionally, driven by pure passion, she is pursuing a second bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, demonstrating her relentless curiosity to understand the relationship between culture, territory, and society.
