G77 & China - Rome Chapter

The G77 & China, Rome Chapter, welcome Mr. Khalid Mehboob as the new Chairperson, 2024.

The G77 and China Group Handover Ceremony took place last week at FAO Red Room, marking the inauguration of Mr. Khalid Mehboob, Alternate Permanent Representative of Pakistan, as the new Chairperson (01 March 2024). The new Chair praised his predecessor, Ambassador Ngor Ndiaye, Permanent Representative of Senegal, recognizing his dedication and leadership during his tenure, since October 2023. 

Ambassador Ndiaye opened the meeting and stated, “Our unity is our strength. It allows us to amplify the voices of our nations. We are guided by hope and the vision of a sustainable and secure world for all”, he said.

The presence of representatives from FAO, IFAD and WFP underscored the significance of the Group, not only for its member countries but also for collaborating organizations. FAO Deputy Director-General, Ms Beth Bechdol, Vice-President of IFAD, Ms. Gérardine Mukeshimana, WFP Assistant Executive Director for Partnerships & Innovation Ms. Rania Dagash-Kamara, and the Independent Chairperson of the Council, Dr. Hans Hoogeveen, delivered remarks to the audience.

Next, Mr. Mehboob addressed the members - widely represented both in person and online -outlining his vision and priorities for the Group in the coming year.

As the G77 celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2024, the Chair emphasized the group's historical role in advocating for the concerns and interests of developing nations globally. Expressing gratitude for the trust placed in him,  he highlighted the responsibility that comes with the role, and pledged to unite members in the collective interest, “to galvanize our own collective action as Members of the G77 and China Group, but also to find pathways for consensus building and collaboration, with all Members of FAO, IFAD and WFP, in the best interests of these three organizations which we hold dear”, he said.

The event featured also the valuable contributions from former Chairpersons: Mr. Yousef Juhail, Permanent Representative of Kuwait; H.E. Carlos Bernardo Cherniak, Permanent Representative of Argentina; and H.E. Mario Arvelo Caamaño, Permanent Representative of the Dominican Republic. They shared meaningful insights and their unique perspectives, pointing out challenges and opportunities for the Group.

In conclusion, Mr Mehboob emphasized the need for cohesion in addressing global agricultural development and food security discussions in Rome. Looking forward, the Chair outlined the group's objectives for the year, including in-depth briefings on critical issues, preparation for events and meetings such as the FAO Regional Conferences and Technical Committees, fostering enhanced coordination and knowledge-sharing between members, among other key initiatives. He expressed gratitude to all members for their presence, acknowledged the support received from FAO staff, from the G77 and China Secretariat, and adjourned the meeting.
