The soil community in Latin America and the Caribbean mobilizes for more sustainable soil management
On 9 and 10 July 2025, the Twelfth Plenary Assembly of the Regional Soil Partnership for Latin America and the Caribbean (ASLAC) was held virtually, constituting a key space for consolidating regional efforts in favour of sustainable soil management. More than 102 partners and focal points from 20 countries participated in this important meeting, which was coordinated and moderated by Carolina Olivera Sánchez, and Natalia Rodriguez Eugenio, ASLAC coordinators from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)’s Global Soil Partnership (GSP).

One of the main milestones of the Assembly was the election of the new steering committee, which appointed Rodrigo Osorio Hermosilla (Chile) as ASLAC regional Chair, Rafael López (Guatemala) as Vice Chair for the Mesoamerican subregion, and Gabrielle de Souza (Trinidad and Tobago) as Vice Chair for the English speaking Caribbean subregion. These new appointments reinforce the regional commitment to institutional strengthening and the effective implementation of policies for sustainable soil management.
The agenda, spread over two days, addressed strategic issues for sustainable agrifood development. The first session began with welcoming remarks by Thorunn Wolfram, GSP Secretary, followed by the presentation of the main conclusions of the Thirteenth GSP Plenary Assembly by Natalia Rodríguez Eugenio.
This was followed by a review of the activities carried out by ASLAC between 2023 and 2025, as well as the collaborations established with regional initiatives such as the Climate Action Platform for Agriculture in Latin America and the Caribbean (PLACA). One of the most noteworthy sections was the presentation of regional proposals for the new work plan, highlighting initiatives such as:
- the creation of a working group and mobilization of resources to address specific aspects of the production and regulation of biofertilizers;
- the exchange of experiences on soil governance, aimed at strengthening the development of national legal frameworks and regional guidelines;
- the development of training modules and exchange of experiences from the Global Soil Doctors Programme on contamination, fertility and soils for nutrition;
- the production of educational content, podcasts and workshops on soil profiling (monoliths), soil laboratory operations and soil organic carbon studies;
- the dissemination of World Soil Day and organization of a Regional Soil Doctors Marathon; and
- the mobilization of resources to strengthen soil laboratory infrastructure, with a special emphasis on the incorporation of spectrophotometry methods.
On the second day, the integration of sustainable soil management into the agenda of the region's agrifood systems was explored in greater depth, with a noteworthy presentation by Ana Posas, FAO Agriculture Officer for Latin America and the Caribbean. The 2025–2027 Work Plan was also discussed and approved, which is strategically aligned with the indicators and targets of the GSP's 2022–2030 Framework for Action.
In conclusion, the Twelfth ASLAC Plenary Assembly not only consolidated regional leadership in the field of sustainable soil management, but also laid the foundations for coordinated, collaborative and long-term work, reaffirming the commitment of Latin American and Caribbean countries to soil health as a central pillar of agrifood sustainability.
