E-consultation on the Economics of Land Degradation in Eurasia

This e-consultation will run from November 17 to December 12, 2014.
Sponsored by the Eurasian Center for Food Security (ECFS) and the World Bank, the objective of this e-consultation is to generate a discussion on the key socio-economic drivers and impacts of land degradation in the Eurasian region (Russia, Central Asia and the Caucasus), identify available tools to guide sustainable land use decisions, and examine the role of policies and institutions is promoting sustainable land systems. The outcome of this discussion will inform the current and future work program of the ECFS, and will also contribute to the activities of the Eurasian Soil Partnership.
In 2011, as part of its contributions to improve global food security, the Russian Federation established the ECFS under the Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU). The ECFS is intended to become a center of excellence on agricultural research and an important member of the global network of agricultural expertise, catalyzing agricultural development in the Eurasian Region and contributing to solving food security issues in Eurasia and globally. The ECFS is currently the Secretariat of the sub-regional Eurasian Soil Partnership (EASP), which was established in November 2013 under the framework of the Global Soil Partnership supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
The following topics have been identified for the discussion:
- Topic 1: What are some of the key socio-economic drivers of land degradation in Eurasia? What are the direct and indirect economic and social impacts of land degradation? How do people respond at various scales and in different contexts to land degradation?
- Topic 2: What tools are available to adequately respond to land degradation and guide sustainable land use decisions? What are soekme good practice examples of sustainable land management approaches in the Eurasian region?
- Topic 3: What are the roles of policies and which institutions enhance decision making and governance for the sustainability of land systems?
