Country introduction:
As a Member State of the European Union (EU), Germany implements EU law including that relating to GM food and feed as well as the deliberate release of GMOs.

My country does not conduct safety assessment of GM food but the country has, or the country is in the process of developing national/regional guidelines that are not in line with the Codex Guidelines in conducting safety assessment of GM food.

As the European Commission is responsible for granting authorisation for placing on the market of genetically modified food in a joint EU Community procedure, Germany does not conduct assessment of genetically modified food independently. Risk assessments for food safety in the EU are carried out by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). EFSA works in close cooperation with the national authorities of the Member States and delivers scientific opinions and recommendations, which are used as the basis for risk management decisions made by the European Commission, the European Parliament and the EU Member States.

The risk assessment of genetically modified food and feed containing stacked transformation events obtained by conventional crossing is based on a risk assessment of each single transformation event. In addition, the risk assessment of stacked transformation events includes an assessment of the following aspects: (a) stability of the transformation events; (b) expression of the transformation events; (c) potential synergistic or antagonistic effects resulting from the combination of the transformation events.
