Country introduction:
Honduras was the first country in Central America to regulate the introduction of genetically modified crops or Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in the year of 1998, and currently leads the production of genetically modified crops in the region.
Current regulations apply only to plants; work is currently underway to include animals in the regulations.
In 2019, the country established technical criteria for evaluating products derived from New Genomic Techniques (NGTs), such as gene editing.

The National Service for Agri-Food Health and Safety (SENASA) is a Honduran government agency, attached to the Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG), that protects animal and plant health and ensures food safety.
It has an advisory body that assesses the scientific risks of GMOs to health, agriculture, and the environment: the National Biotechnology and Agricultural Biosafety Committee (CNBBA).
