Mali
Country introduction:
Mali adopted on December 1, 2008 the Law N ° 08-042 of relative to the safety in biotechnology in the Republic of Mali
In 2010, Mali adopted Decree No. 10-682 / P-RM of December 30, 2010 determining the modalities of experimentation of genetically modified organisms.
In 2003 Mali created by the law n ° 03-043 of December 30th, 2003 the National Food Safety Agency with the main missions:
Evaluation of the health risks that may present:
-foods for humans and animals
- water intended for human consumption;
-the processes and conditions of production, processing, preservation, transport, storage and distribution of foodstuffs;
- food additives;
- residues of veterinary, phytosanitary and other contaminants;
- the residues of fertilizing materials and culture supports;
- conditioning and materials intended to be in contact with the aforementioned products
By Decree No. 06-259 / P-RM of 23 June 2006, Mali instituted the marketing authorization for food, feed and food additives;
The National Food Safety Agency is the Codex Contact Point, regularly participates in the sessions of the Codex Alimentarius Commission and Committees, it participated in the 06th Session of the Codex Special Intergovernmental Group on Foods Derived from Codex Alimentarius. Biotechnology in Chiba, Japan, 27 November - 1 December 2006.
At the moment, we are not doing any assessment of the safety of genetically modified foods.
The country has a National Biosafety Framework (NBC) is a set of political, legislative, administrative and technical instruments designed to ensure an adequate level of protection in the area of transfer, handling and use of organisms Genetically Modified Organisms of Modern Biotechnology that May Have Adverse Effects on Human Health, Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity
and the environment.
The National Biosafety Framework document has three parts:
Part 1: Background and history of biosafety, current state of regulation, proper biosafety framework (regulation, administration, decision making including risk assessment and management, information and public participation mechanisms) ;
Part 2: Preliminary Draft Law on Biotechnology Security in the Republic of Mali;
Part 3: Annexes to the draft law on security in biotechnology in the Republic of Mali.
