Serbia
Country introduction:
In the Republic of Serbia, GMO issues are regulated since 2001. when the Law on Genetically Modified Organisms was adopted. That law had regulated the conditions for contained use, deliberate release into the environment, and placing on the market of GMOs and products of GMOs.
National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia on 29.05.2009. adopted a new Law on genetically modified organisms ("Official Gazette RS", No. 41/09). In accordance with Article 2 of the new Law, Serbia now has general ban on placing on the market of GMO and products of GMO (including GM food and feed) as well as on commercial growing of GMOs. According to Serbian 2nd National Report on implementation of Cartagena Protocol, this ban is not in compliance with EU legislation in this area and not consistent with The Law on Food Safety (Official Gazette of RS, No. 41/09)
