The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in partnership with the Eenhana Town Council and the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism (MEFT), signified a milestone event under the “Green Cities Initiative (GCI): flagship cities for integrated green oases and food systems” project with the official handover of a nursery and a symbolic tree-planting ceremony in Eenhana, Ohangwena Region.

Cities play a pivotal role in transforming agrifood systems to enhance food security, resilience, and sustainability. This critical role was explored during the recent side event of the 52nd Committee on World Food Security (CFS52) held in Rome last month.


Under the session titled "Cities as Agents of Change in Agrifood Systems," FAO, ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability, and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) spotlighted how urban areas can drive sustainable agrifood systems by leveraging local governance, community involvement, and innovative partnerships. The event convened leaders and experts to share practical examples of multi-level governance and multi-stakeholder actions addressing food security, nutrition, resilience, and sustainability.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has launched a project to help address the challenges of urbanization in five countries across Africa.

Funded by Italy, the USD 3 million Green Cities Initiative in Action for Africa project will work with 10 cities across Algeria, Côte d'Ivoire, Kenya, Mozambique and Uganda to identify and develop investment strategies to promote sustainable urban development, minimize city carbon footprints and adapt to climate shocks.

Harare – With 55 percent of the world’s population residing in urban areas, it is estimated that by 2050, urban population is expected to rise to 68 percent, mainly in low-income countries. Local councils are finding it increasingly challenging to ensure urban and peri-urban populations have access to inclusive, sustainable and resilient food systems. Zimbabwe is no exception.

Rome - Rural livelihoods are quite intertwined with urban centers, with mid-sized cities playing an extraordinary role in providing required services, including for food security, agricultural livelihoods and viable rural development, according to a new study by researchers at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and other institutions.

Yaoundé - The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations today held an official launch here of its Green Cities Initiative, which is already being piloted in Cameroon, with seven municipalities submitting letters of intent to join the initiative.
remarks at the launch event, FAO Director-General QU Dongyu noted that with two thirds of the world’s population expected to live in cities by 2050 - urban areas are facing major challenges.

The circular bioeconomy (CBE) is attracting considerable interest as a way to stimulate economic growth within city regions and end dependency on non-renewable resources, with many initiatives focused on aspects of food systems. A recent City Region Food Systems (CRFS) Knowledge Exchange webinar brought together experts to discuss developments and ways to overcome barriers to scaling up and realising the full environmental, economic, and social benefits.

Asia’s cities are growing at such a fast pace that nearly 55 percent of the region’s enormous population is expected to reside in urban areas by 2030, and that will have equally enormous consequences for urban food security and nutrition, according to the main findings of a new report by four United Nations agencies.

Rapidly expanding cities in very dry parts of the world must be turned into "green urban oases" to ensure they become both healthier places to live in and more resilient to climate change, says a new report launched today by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Some 35 percent of the world’s largest cities are built in the world’s drylands. This includes such megacities as Cairo, Mexico City and New Delhi. In all, they are home to more than 2 billion people, 90 percent of them in developing countries.

The Arbor Day Foundation, along with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), today announced the cities recognised through the Tree Cities of the World programme. 2019 was the first year of eligibility for this worldwide initiative and 68 cities from 17 countries were recognised for their commitment to urban forestry management. The programme has since grown and now includes even more cities worldwide.
