FAO–Hungary Scholarship Programme

Established in 2008, this fully funded postgraduate scholarship programme provided by the Government of Hungary in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) enables young agricultural specialists to undertake master’s level studies in English at one of Hungary’s agricultural universities.

Knowledge is key to help farmers and rural communities meet current and future challenges. The cooperation between FAO and Hungary enhances knowledge and information sharing on topics such as agriculture, rural development, food safety, sustainable natural resource management, or water management. The scholarship is offered to candidates coming from beneficiary countries and territories of Africa, Asia, and Europe. This aspect is particularly important to support FAO’s Leave No One Behind principle, which focuses on reducing inequalities both among and within countries, with an emphasis on improving the well-being of vulnerable groups, regions, and countries.

After having completed the programme, to date, around 400 alumni of the FAO–Hungary scholarship have returned home not only with enhanced academic knowledge, but also with improved career prospects. A network of graduated scholars, managed by the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture, is helping them turn these hopes into reality and keep contacts alive.
