Statistical concepts and definitionThe prevalence of severe food insecurity represents the proportion of the population in households identified as severely lacking in food. This evaluation uses data from the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) or similar experience-based questionnaires like the HFSSM. Estimates of food insecurity are derived from the Rasch model, a one-parameter logistic Item Response Theory model, with cross-country comparability achieved through calibration against the FAO-maintained FIES global reference scale. "Severe" food insecurity is determined by experiences equivalent to not eating for an entire day. Essentially, a household is deemed severely food insecure if an adult reports experiencing, at times during the year, extreme food scarcity actions such as reducing food intake, skipping meals, or enduring a day without food due to financial constraints. This indicator reflects critical food access issues.
RelevanceThis measure aligns with indicator 2.1.2 within the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) framework, aiming to eliminate hunger and ensure universal access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food by 2030 (SDG target 2.1).
Time coverageData, covering 2014 to 2020, are presented at aggregate levels to mitigate the effects of sampling variability from small national samples. Country-level data are not disclosed. Where suitable data exist, aggregate values for groups of countries are calculated as population-weighted averages of national prevalence rates, provided at least 50 percent of the group's total population is represented by the countries with national estimates.
Sector coverageSocial/Health
Data compilationThe aggregates are computed using a weighted population average.

* This field expresses the impact on vulnerability. The minus sign indicates that it has a vulnerability-decreasing impact (positive impact on resilience), and the plus sign indicates a vulnerability-increasing impact.
