Statistical concepts and definitionUNHCR's Statistical Online Population Database excludes Palestinian refugees under UNRWA's mandate but includes those outside UNRWA areas. Refugees, key to migrant statistics, are defined as individuals who seek sanctuary across borders and have received refugee status or temporary protection. Data sources include governments, UNHCR offices, and NGOs, with registrations and other methods like surveys forming the data backbone. In industrialized countries lacking government data, UNHCR estimates refugee numbers based on asylum-seeker recognitions. Until 2007, resettled refugees were also counted in these estimates.
RelevanceMigration is crucial for global integration, with migrants benefiting both their home and host countries' economies. However, migration data collection faces hurdles, complicating international comparisons. In developed nations, resettled refugees are often counted in censuses or registers. As of the end of 2010, the global refugee count stood at 10.55 million, including 597 300 in refugee-like situations, with developing countries hosting 80 percent or 8.5 million of these refugees.
