Objective / Goal The key objective of this project is to provide emergency livestock protection assistance and cash-based assistance for safeguarding food and nutrition security and ensure emergency agriculture livelihoods protection to mitigate the impacts of drought.

Activities

The project targets vulnerable marginal herding, landless, women-headed, and persons with disability households who are anticipated to be adversely impacted by the current drought conditions, in addition to other recent shocks including COVID-19 and worsening food crisis in Afghanistan. This was achieved by undertaking the following activities:

  • provision of emergency livestock protection assistance package;
  • provision of cash assistance through unconditional cash transfers;
  • repair / rehabilitation of local irrigation structures, livestock watering sources, flood protection walls, and soil-water conservation structures through cash-for-work activities to accelerate resilience building gains at community level, which would further contribute to saving livelihoods and averting the drought turning into a famine;
  • awareness building on key protection messages;
  • sensitization on COVID-19 safety measures to adopt during (a) farm level activities, (b) market participation and (c) routine day-to-day life to minimize the transmission of COVID-19 and other important livestock diseases such foot and mouth disease.
