Objective / Goal

The overall objective of the project is to safeguard pastoral and agro-pastoral livelihoods and enhance the food and nutrition security conditions of households by helping maintain their assets in drought-affected woredas. The project also aims to boost pastoralists- incomes, allowing them to purchase food and other immediate needs, through the destocking of weak non-productive animals.

Activities
This project will provide nutrient-dense feed, quality forage and access to water and grazing, including through advocating for peaceful grazing with local authorities. Veterinary care including treating diagnosed conditions and prophylactic treatments for core breeding animals is equally important.

The key breeding and milking livestock of pastoral and agro-pastoral households will be protected and further deterioration of livestock productivity will be prevented in ten woredas of Somali as a result of targeted animal feed distribution, animal health and destocking (slaughter and commercial) services, the project will deliver the following outputs and related activities.

Main activities:

  • forming slaughter/commercial destocking committees at woreda and kabele levels and identification of target beneficiaries (sellers and receivers);
  • awareness creation on slaughter and commercial destocking among the established destocking committees on beneficiary identifications, livestock purchase and meat distribution;
  • purchase of weak animals and slaughter/commercial destocked to ensure that pastoralists’ core breeding stock survive by destocking those that were already weak allowing pastoralist to focus limited feeds resources on the remaining livestock;
  • provide subsidies for butchers and cooperatives participating in commercial destocking (butchers and cooperatives will be paid for participating in the destocking process);
  • monitoring of project activities (beneficiary selection, provision of feeds, health, destocking and technical backstopping).
