Two main activities were conducted:

  • Improve means of pastoralist livelihood through collaboration with veterinary services institute. A total of 342 community animal health workers received multivitamins and were trained in producing mineral licks in order to increase the dairy production and livestock health of  5 900 households. This action focused especially on dairy cows and calves, which represent essential animals staying permanently in community places with women, children, and old people, while men and other livestock joined the transhumance. This action allowed the immediate improvement of milk production (and availability at the community level)  and the quick improvement of milk availability. Community animal health workers, that are men and women between the communities, were selected and trained based on FAO’s experience in the province. Also, 3 drinking troughs were rehabilitated to provide water to livestock.
  • Improve the availability of healthy food in 2 500 agro-pastoral households, through collaboration with the NGO International Ajuda de Desenvolivmento de Povo para Povo (IADPP).  Targeted households received seeds of cereals, beans, and vegetables and agriculture tools, and production assistance (training on micro-gardens).
