Budget 500 000 USD
Project Code OSRO/KEN/203/BEL
Objective / Goal To mitigate the adverse impacts of drought on the food security of vulnerable pastoral households.
Beneficiaries 116 400
Activities

FAO will support the implementation of the following activities:

  • Output 1:   Food and nutrition security of 2 400 vulnerable pastoral households safeguarded through increased immediate food access. The provision of 240 000 USD in form of unconditional cash transfers (UCT) will allow drought‑affected households to cover basic expenditures until the next harvest (up to six months of cash transfers depending on needs). Each identified beneficiary household will receive two rounds of UCT at USD 50 per round of transfer, for a total of USD 100 per household. This amount will be in line with the cash and finance assistance of the government of Kenya (GoK-NDMA).
    Activities to achieve Output 1:
    • selection and verification of vulnerable food-insecure pastoral households in Baringo and Kajiado Counties;
    • cash transfer (2 rounds) to 2 400 households in the two beneficiary counties by FAO;
    • post-distribution monitoring by FAO staff;
    • regular reporting, communication, and outreach on the project activities.
  • Output 2:  Access to water for livestock improved. 24, 15 USD will be provided as cash for work (CFW) to be utilized for the rehabilitation of water reservoirs to harvest and preserve water during the March, April, and May (MAM) rains. The activities will entail, depending on area needs and assessment report, desilting of the water pans and rehabilitation of basic borehole infrastructure (water troughs for livestock, standpipes for supply around the water sources to avoid animals contaminating the water). The daily rates of 5 USD per day will be used and this is pegged on GoK daily rates for kazi mtaani (National Hygiene Program) and kazi kwa vijana (Work for Youth program). This translates to work in town and employment for the youth, respectively.
    Activities to achieve Output 2:
    • rapid assessment of water resources in the select counties;
    • procurement of required equipment as per the assessment results;
    • community dialogue on cash for work activities;
    • rehabilitation of selected water points based on assessment.
  • Output 3. Livestock assets of 17 000 pastoralists are protected through the vaccination of 850 000 sheep and goats.
    The Kenya government is going to partially benefit from a FAO donation of 4 000 000 doses of the Peste de Petits Ruminants (PPR) vaccine that will be used as FAO’s contribution to the implementation of PPR control and Eradication Strategy (2017-2027) in Kenya. To this end, this project will support the operationalization of the PPR vaccination activities in Baringo and Kajiado counties and enhance the FAO drought response effort in the arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) where livestock are negatively impacted by the drought through depleted pastures and browse.
    Activities to achieve Output 3:
    • facilitate county teams in Baringo and Kajiado Counties to vaccinate 850 000 sheep and goats in target counties;
    • monitoring and evaluation of vaccination activities.
