General Provisions
To support efforts towards forest monitoring, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has developed the EX-ACT: Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool to help countries identify capacity gaps and weaknesses and address their real needs in a targeted manner.
The EX-ACT: Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool is excel-based. 
The Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool (EX-ACT) is an appraisal system developed by FAO providing estimates of the impact of agriculture and forestry development projects, programmes and policies on the carbon-balance.
The carbon-balance is defined as the net balance from all greenhouse gases (GHGs) expressed in CO2 equivalent that were emitted or sequestered due to project implementation as compared to a business-as-usual scenario.
EX-ACT is a land-based accounting system, estimating C stock changes (i.e. emissions or sinks of CO2) as well as GHG emissions per unit of land, expressed in equivalent tonnes of CO2 per hectare and year. The tool helps project designers to estimate and prioritize project activities with high benefits in economic and climate change mitigation terms. The amount of GHG mitigation may also be used as part of economic analyses as well as for the application for additional project funds.
EX-ACT can be applied on a wide range of development projects from all Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sub-sectors, including besides others projects on climate change mitigation, sustainable land management, watershed development, production intensification, food security, livestock, forest management or land use change. Furthermore, it is cost effective, requires a comparatively small amount of data, and has resources (tables, maps) which can help find the required information. While EX-ACT is mostly used at project level it may easily be up scaled to the programme/sector level and can also be used for policy analysis.

Definitions
3.	The following definitions shall apply to these Terms of Use and any other related document:
i.	‘Users’ refer to those end users who have accessed and/or received the Tool by any means, without prior registration to the Tool website.  
ii.	‘Registered Users/Subscribers’ refer to those users who have registered in the Tool website, in order to be able to download and use the Tool. 
iii.	‘Third Party(ies)’ means any natural or legal person, public authority, agency or any other body other than the Registered Users, Users or FAO.
iv.	‘Personal Data’ means any information that identifies the individual, or can be used to directly or indirectly identify the individual, either from the registration form, or from the data in conjunction with other information that is in, or is likely to come into, the possession of FAO. v.	 ‘Processing of data’ means any operation or set of operations which is performed on, or using data, whether or not by automatic means, such as collection, recording, organization, storage, adaptation or alteration, retrieval, consultation, use, disclosure by transmission, dissemination or otherwise making available, alignment or combination, blocking, erasure or destruction.
Using the Tool
4.	The Tool is updated by FAO on a regular basis. All end users should download the latest version of the Tool following the registration instructions provided hereinafter and available on the Tool website.

5.	When registering for the Tool, you will be required to provide FAO with your Personal Data. You acknowledge, agree and consent to FAO’s processing of your Personal Data, in accordance with FAO’s rules, policies and procedures and to the exclusion of any single national system of law, and that FAO may make available such Personal Data to Third Parties exclusively for the purposes of the Tool, or for FAO institutional activities (see http://www.fao.org/contact-us/privacy-policy/en/). You may, at any time, request FAO to delete, review, correct or update the registration and Personal Data by writing to exact@fao.org.

6.	Following registration, FAO reserves the exclusive right to verify your eligibility to download and use the Tool and to not accept any request that, in its sole discretion, is not in accordance with these Terms of Use or the FAO’s Terms and Conditions for use of its website. Upon validation of your eligibility by FAO, you may download and use the Tool.

7.	FAO reserves the right at any time, to modify or discontinue, temporarily or permanently the Tool, including any means of accessing or utilizing it, at its sole discretion with or without prior notice to you.

The Biodiversity Integrated Assessment and Computation Tool (B-INTACT) Tool is excel-based. 
The Biodiversity Integrated Assessment and Computation Tool (B-INTACT) uniquely seeks to provide a thorough biodiversity assessment of project-level activities in the AFOLU sector, taking on both a quantitative and a qualitative approach. The quantitative approach considers a set of relationships for anthropogenic impacts on biodiversity from land use changes, habitat fragmentation, infrastructure and human encroachment, expressed in the mean species abundance (MSA) metric. Non-quantifiable impacts to biodiversity from project activities are assessed with a qualitative appraisal.
The tool aims to (i) quantify the biodiversity impact of various investments at project and policy-level using globally recognized environmental assessment methodologies, (ii) provide decision-makers with a set of policy indicators to help making informed decisions, (iii) extend the scope of environmental assessments to capture biodiversity concerns which are not accounted for in conventional carbon pricing, and (iv) support countries in accessing funds from international financial institutions and mechanisms to fund projects, programmes and policies.

The EX-Ante Carbon-balance Tool for Value Chains (EX-ACT VC) is excel-based. 
The EX-Ante Carbon-balance Tool for Value Chains (EX-ACT VC) is a quantitative multi-appraisal system that aimed to support policy makers in identifying improvements at each stage of the value chain when designing projects and policies for low carbon value chains by assessing the environmental and socio-economic performance of agri-food value chains. It calculates GHG emissions downstream the value chain analysed, from processing, storage, packaging, to transportation at the retailer-door, while accounting for the emissions at production level, derived from another tool/software, such as EX-ACT  (in tCO2-eq per tonne of product).
EX-ACT VC proposes a flexible approach where the user can map the value chain, identifies the actors involved and the different activities they perform. The analysis of project benefits is conducted by comparing two scenarios: a “current” situation at the present, and a “planned” scenario that project seeks to achieve. The tool calculated GHG emissions at each stage of the VC downstream the value chain; the analysis can include the farm-level emissions coming from the FAO’s Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool (EX-ACT), which quantifies the land-based emissions associated with production. The socio-economic component of the EX-ACT VC includes on- and off-farm performance assessment of creating value added, income levels and basic employment statistics, among indicators. Furthermore, the tool calculates a set of economic indicators to evaluate the profitability (wealth accumulation) of the actors operating in the value chain, and estimates the number and nature of direct and indirect jobs created along the value chain. Additionally, the tool includes an estimation of food loss, an assessment of gender and youth participation in the value chain, and an SDG tracker. The tool allows to perform the analysis under two different scenarios, "current" and "planned", and compares the two to capture any improvement attributable to project implementation
By analyzing agri-food value chains, policy makers and researchers are able to better understand how economic, social and environmental dimensions are intertwined. This is an important step, which allows for identification of areas for potential improvement along an agri-food value chain. The EX-ACT VC tool, derived from the EX-ACT tool, is based on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) methodology, augmented with methodologies from peer reviewed literature to cover the sectors and actors in the value chain.
