The Forest and Landscape Restoration Mechanism

A guide to ensuring local and global impact: Forestry working paper on delivering tree genetic resources in forest and landscape restoration

From 04/10/2023 to

Location: Sydney, Australia

The launch of FAO forestry working paper “Delivering tree genetic resources in forest and landscape restoration” will be showcased during the 30th session of the Asia-Pacific Forestry Commission (APFC) on 4 October 2023 from 13.30-14.15 (GMT +10) in Sydney, Australia.

In collaboration with the Alliance of Bioversity International and International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), this paper will illustrate practical approaches to genetic resources conservation and use. It will provide 13 case studies from around the world to analyse the best practices and approaches. This event is an opportunity for participants to learn about, share and discuss key challenges and opportunities for integrating conservation and management of tree genetic resources in forest and landscape restoration (FLR) projects in Asia-Pacific countries.

The outcomes of forest and landscape restoration for climate change mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity conservation and ecosystem service delivery all depend on the genetic diversity of tree species. Yet, genetic diversity continues to be overlooked in restoration projects because of a lack of information on its importance and practical guidance on better integrating it in restoration efforts.
