The Forest and Landscape Restoration Mechanism

Enhancing capacities of all stakeholders involved in restoration activities

17/07/2023

17 July 2023, Rome –The enhancement of the different types of capital of those involved in restoration is key to ensuring the sustainability of initiatives in support of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021–2030, according to a new booklet released by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) today.

The Capacity, Knowledge and Learning Action Plan for the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration is the result of a joint effort developed by members of the FAO-led United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration Task Force on Best Practices, which was established to enhance knowledge dissemination and system-wide capacity-development efforts throughout the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021–2030.

The publication identifies the gaps where knowledge products or capacity-development initiatives are needed across various stakeholder groups based on the results of a global capacity needs assessment, a stocktaking of initiatives and products, and several targeted consultations.

Eight key capacity- and knowledge-development initiatives

Based on these efforts, the action plan specifies the terms of reference for eight key capacity- and knowledge-development initiatives tailored to different stakeholder groups and based on a set of recommended priority actions. The eight key capacity- and knowledge-development initiatives aim to achieve three main objectives: i) develop individual and organizational capacity across sectors and scales; ii) foster networks, partnerships and collective action mechanisms; and iii) strengthen the enabling environment for ecosystem restoration.

“These eight key initiatives will stimulate the systemic capacity development that is needed to accomplish the vision, goals, outcomes and impacts of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration," said Christophe Besacier, Senior Forestry Officer and Forest and Landscape Restoration Coordinator at FAO.

The Task Force on Best Practices will support and implement these eight key initiatives through coordinated activities, collaborations and funding mechanisms that enhance the mission and effective operation of all key partners and collaborators. Their implementation will build enabling conditions for restoration action at all levels of society.
