Review of Canadian rejections in 2017 – Histamine causes

In 2017, there were 30 border rejections recorded due to the detection of histamine above the maximum limits in fishery products, which was particularly found in mixed fish sauce.

The products rejected for the presence of histamine increased compared with 2016 (13 products rejection) by 131 percent.

Histamine
Histamine, together with other biogenic amines, may form in fish and can lead to histamine poisoning also known as scombrotoxin fish poisoning or scombroid fish poisoning. Excess histamine can affect the cardiovascular system (tachycardia, headache, hypotension, rash and flushing), gastrointestinal tract (cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) and neurological functions (pain and itching). Other symptoms include a burning sensation in the mouth, swelling of the tongue and a peppery flavour to the fish.
