Colombia | FAO, UNDP and Ministry of Agriculture launch Alliance to update the National Strategy for Adaptation of Climate Change in the agricultural sector

On 11 August 2017 - the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR), in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), held the official launch of the Integration of Agriculture in National Adaptation Plans Programme (PNACC-Ag) in Bogota, Colombia.

The event was attended by representatives from the public and private sectors, civil society organizations and research institutes. Several of whom participated on the panel session on “The transformation of the agricultural sector was developed to face the challenges of adaptation to climate change”, in which challenges and advances in the country in terms of adaptation from the vision of the different institutions, sectors and regions were presented.

The PNACC-Ag programme is a global initiative in which FAO and UNDP are joining efforts to support the process of planning adaptation to climate change in the agricultural sector at the national level. It is funded by the German government through the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the Federal Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation, Construction and Nuclear Safety (BMUB).

In Colombia, the programme focuses on adjusting and updating the Adaptation Strategy of the agricultural sector to climatic phenomena. It also seeks to better articulate and reflect the Ministries of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR), the Environment and Sustainable Development (MADS) and the National Department of Planning (DNP), as well as contribute to the strategy as a country tool to fulfill the commitments under the Paris agreement and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.

It is expected that by the end of 2018, Colombia will have a tool that will enable it to take action to adapt to climate change, improve evidence-based decision-making capacities and incorporate differential approaches such as recognition of the needs of the territories and the gender perspective.
