Los datos forestales transparentes y accesibles son esenciales para una acción climática eficaz. A medida que los países avanzan en el cumplimiento de sus compromisos en el marco del Acuerdo de París, sigue creciendo la necesidad de contar con herramientas fiables, abiertas y fáciles de usar para la recopilación y el análisis de datos. 

Para apoyar este esfuerzo global, la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura (FAO) ha invertido en el desarrollo de soluciones digitales para promover la transparencia de los datos forestales. En el centro de estas soluciones se encuentra Open Foris, una suite de herramientas gratuitas y de código abierto que ayuda a países, organizaciones, investigadores y profesionales a recopilar, gestionar, analizar y reportar datos sobre bosques y uso de la tierra de manera más transparente.

El 9 de junio de 2026, el Departamento de Agricultura y Medio Ambiente, en coordinación con los organismos y unidades pertinentes, organizó una sesión de formación sobre el uso de la herramienta informática Open Forest Ground para apoyar la recopilación de datos sobre zonas cultivadas, garantizando el cumplimiento de la normativa de la Unión Europea sobre la producción y el comercio de productos no deforestados (EUDR).

La FAO impulsa también herramientas tecnológicas que potencian esta acción en territorio. SEPAL, permite el monitoreo de bosques, uso de suelos y restauración de paisajes, a través de una plataforma de código abierto adoptada por más de 100 países; y Open Foris facilita la recopilación y análisis de datos forestales por parte de comunidades, técnicos e instituciones.

Alrededor de la ciudad Amazónica de Iquitos, la metrópolis más poblada de la Amazonia peruana, se encuentran algunas de las turberas tropicales más extensas y mejor conservadas del planeta. Estos ecosistemas complejos y poco entendidos, conocidos localmente como “chupaderas”, almacenan enormes cantidades de carbono y sostienen los medios de vida de los Pueblos Indígenas. Aunque cubren solo alrededor del 5 % del territorio peruano, según algunos estudios estos almacenen bajo del suelo tanto carbono como todos los bosques del país, por lo que desempeñan un papel clave en la regulación del clima a nivel global.

Whether for national communications under the UNFCCC, participation in carbon markets, or the emerging Tropical Forest Forever Facility (TFFF), governments need reliable, defensible, and transparent data that reveal the impact of their adaptation and mitigation actions. As early as the 16th century, European laws regulated logging, and by the 17th century, growing wood scarcity in Central Europe intensified concerns about sustainable supply. In the 1850s, foresters such as D. Brandis formalized these principles through systematic teak inventories in Burma, helping establish scientific forest management.

México está reforzando sus capacidades de monitoreo forestal, un paso fundamental para los casi 12 millones de personas —incluidos 3,6 millones de Pueblos Indígenas— que dependen de los bosques para su subsistencia. 

En agosto de 2024, la FAO impartió una capacitación específica sobre Open Foris Arena, la plataforma de código abierto de la Organización para la recopilación y el análisis de datos de campo, en el marco del programa AIM4Forests: Acelerando el monitoreo innovador de los bosques, financiado por el Reino Unido de Gran Bretaña e Irlanda del Norte. Veinticinco especialistas de la Comisión Nacional Forestal de México (CONAFOR) aprendieron a diseñar encuestas, recopilar datos con Arena Mobile e integrar el análisis estadístico directamente en sus flujos de trabajo.

AIM4Commodities: Advancing traceability and Digital Public Infrastructure in Kenya's coffee sector

From May to July 2025, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), with funding from the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ)  and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, carried out two missions to Kenya under the AIM4Commodities work stream and the AIM4Forests programme. As one of four pilot countries, alongside Colombia, Viet Nam and Lao PDR, Kenya is testing and scaling up approaches to strengthen forest monitoring, enhance supply chain traceability, and promote sustainable land use through Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI).
