WaPOR, remote sensing for water productivity

Co-design workshop of WaPOR based irrigation performance assessment tool in West Al-Gharraf, Iraq

03/10/2023

On the 1st and 2nd of October 2023, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) held a co-design workshop for the irrigation performance assessment tool in West Gharraf, Iraq.

The technical experts from the Ministry of Water Resources (MoWR), the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), the Ministry of Environment (MOE), the Ministry of planning (MOP), and universities participated in the activity.

The proposed application will support the MoWR in assessing the status/performance of the selected irrigation scheme based on WaPOR data and ground data collected by MoWR , MoA and MOP. The IWMI-WaPOR team will adopt a co-design approach to ensure that the irrigation performance application is embedded within the planning and operations of the stakeholders and fits the needs for decision making.

The event developed a road map for the tool co-design which includes data requirements and sharing, pilot area identification, timelines, and assigning roles and responsibilities, operation and maintenance of the tool, and training plans for co-designing the tool’s functionality, including user experience (UX)/user interface (UI) design, and offline vs online functionality.
