WaPOR, remote sensing for water productivity

Data validation workshop in Jordan

13/01/2023

In collaboration with IHE-Delft, FAO WaPOR conducted a 3 days in-person training on WaPOR data validation between the 12 and the 14 of December 2022 in Amman, Jordan.

Twenty five participants (6 from Palestine and 19 from Jordan) from different governmental entities were in attendance. The objective of the training was to enable the participants to validate WaPOR data using the available on-ground data. It included an introduction to concepts related to data validation as well as hands-on exercises using WaPOR data and real ground data from Palestine and Jordan. These mainly included precipitation data and evapotranspiration data.

The National Agricultural Research Center in Jordan, a key partners for WaPOR in the country, presented an example of the validation of reference evapotranspiration using data from the WaPOR platform for the Jordan Valley (250m). Participants to the training were also updated on the progresses made on the WaPOR database. To conclude, there was a brainstorming exercise that resulted in participants proposing several applications related to water management and agricultural water productivity using WaPOR data.
