Inception workshop held in Cairo, Egypt

The WaPOR 2 inception workshop in Egypt has taken place in Cairo on 28 November 2023. The workshop was attended by 50 participants from diverse fields who actively engaged in the discussions regarding harnessing WaPOR data for effective impact.

The workshop facilitated fruitful exchanges of ideas, laying a solid groundwork for future collaborations. Discussions also elucidated stakeholders' roles and responsibilities, setting the stage for subsequent project phases.

Mr Nasreldin Hag Alamin, FAO Representative in Egypt, emphasized the crucial role of accurate data in guiding sustainable agricultural practices. Eng Walid Hakiki, speaking on behalf of the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, stressed the transformative potential of integrating WaPOR data into Egypt's water management frameworks. 

Marjolein Jongman, Senior Secretary at the Embassy of the Netherlands in Egypt, reiterated the commitment of the Netherlands to supporting initiatives that enhance agricultural productivity and water resource management, highlighting the strategic partnership between the two countries in achieving sustainable development goals.

The participants also emphasized the need for collaborative efforts in Capacity building, to equip stakeholders with the necessary skills for leveraging the WaPOR database effectively. Training programs targeting farmers and institutional capacity building emerged as critical components in enhancing land and water productivity and informing evidence-based policymaking.

With its high turnout and active participation, the inception workshop reflected stakeholders' commitment to leveraging WaPOR data for sustainable development. The insights gleaned are poised to inform strategic planning, advancing Egypt's journey towards agricultural sustainability and water security. This event marked a significant step forward towards spatial based solutions for sustainable agriculture.
