WaPOR, remote sensing for water productivity

WaPOR at the 24th WaterNet/WARFSA/GWP-SA Symposium

05/10/2023

The 24th WaterNet/WARFSA/GWP-SA* Symposium serves as a crucial platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration in the field of water resources management in Africa. Livia Peiser, representing WaPOR, participated in the virtual session "Remote Sensing for Water Accounting and Water Productivity Assessments in Africa" at this symposium. The session brought together a diverse group of experts and researchers who contributed their insights and experiences on the transformative role of remote sensing data in sustainable water resources management, with a particular emphasis on water accounting and water productivity applications. The symposium provided an extensive overview of innovative approaches, data sources, and methodologies contributing to improved water management and productivity assessment in the region, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) indicators 6.4.1 and 6.4.2.

The interactive panel discussion, moderated by Dr. Marloes Mul and Dr. Seleshi Yalew from IHE Delft, delved into the future prospects of remote sensing data in water management, offering a platform for in-depth exploration and audience engagement. The session successfully illuminated how remote sensing data can accelerate change, spur innovation, and seamlessly integrate into regional water management strategies, offering practical insights to inspire its broader adoption, especially in data-scarce regions like Africa.

WaterNet is a regional network of Southern African universities and research institutions dealing with capacity building and research in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM).

WARFSA stands for the Water Research Fund for Southern Africa. It is a fund that supports research on water-related issues in Southern Africa.

GWP-SA stands for the Global Water Partnership Southern Africa. It is a network that promotes the integrated and sustainable development and management of water resources.
