WaPOR, remote sensing for water productivity

WaPOR at the 3rd Baghdad International Water Conference on May 6

Jippe Hoogeveen, a staff of the Land and Water division at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Chief Technical Officer for the WaPOR project, recently attended the third Baghdad International Water Conference held between May 6 and 7, 2023.

During the event, Mr. Hoogeveen participated as a speaker in a session chaired by Dr. Salah EL Hajj Hassan, the FAO representative in Iraq. The session focused on innovative approaches to control water use in irrigated agriculture, climate-smart agricultural practices to enhance water productivity, and climate-informed water planning using water accounting in arid contexts. Hoogeveen's presentation was axed around WaPOR data and the WaPOR project. Mr. Hoogeveen's presentation focused on knowledge driven agricultural water management through new technologies and innovations.

The session had a good attendance, indicating the growing interest and urgency surrounding climate-smart agriculture. Attendees responded positively to the session, recognizing among others the significance of an approach that incorporates remote sensing data to address water scarcity challenges and promote sustainable agricultural practices.

Following his participation, he held a series of meetings with Iraqi officials to further discussions on the implementation of the WaPOR project in the country which aims to improve water resource management and improve agricultural practices.

The Baghdad International Water Conference, organized annually by the Iraqi Ministry of Water Resources, serves as a platform to share knowledge, technologies, and studies on efficient water utilization, storage, and processing. Through events like this, countries and professionals can keep updated on the latest advancements in water management, ensuring a sustainable future for all.
