Objectives:
Description: The Government of India and various State Governments have implemented several tree-planting schemes to achieve the target of the National Forest Policy (1988), aiming to bring one-third of the country's total land area under forest cover and to fulfil international commitments on climate change and land degradation. This technical cooperation project develops robust protocols for certifying quality planting material and nurseries specifically tailored for timber and non-timber agroforestry species in India. It addresses significant gaps in current programs, ensuring farmers have access to reliable and certified planting materials. Leveraging FAO's technical expertise and global best practices, this initiative enhances the efficiency and effectiveness of agroforestry investments while promoting sustainable practices across the sector. In collaboration with the Government of India, FAO bridges technical deficiencies and encourages farmers to adopt agroforestry practices. By institutionalizing certification standards, the project safeguards the quality of planting materials and optimizes the outcomes of large-scale agroforestry initiatives. This strategic partnership contributes substantially to India's sustainable development goals, fostering resilience and sustainability in the agriculture and forestry sectors.
