Fish is an important source of animal protein in Sri Lankan diets. Fish is not only a source of protein but also a unique source of healthy fat and essential micro-nutrients, namely long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, iodine, vitamin D, and calcium. Consuming fish in the diet increases the amount of iron and zinc that the body absorbs from other foods. Inland fish is a low-cost source of fish for the rural poor who reside in non-coastal areas.
