Second in a series of reports on water quality criteria for European freshwater fish prepared for the European Inland Fisheries Advisory Cornmission (EIFAC) by the Working Party on Water Quality Criteria. The background of the project is described and reasons for establishing water quality criteria for fish explained. This is followed by a literature survey on effects of acid pH and alkaline pH values. Tentative water quality criteria are suggested as well as the scope for further research.
