Nepalese mountaineer Nirmal Purja, the star of a new Netflix documentary "14 Peaks", was recently named a Mountain Advocate for the United Nations Environment Programme. He has spent years scaling the world’s highest peaks. But during a recent visit to Nepal’s Mount Manaslu, Purja was not going for the summit. He was there to clean up piles of rubbish, including ropes and oxygen canisters, left behind by other climbers.

Asociación Ecoturística de Recuperación Montaña in Peru celebrated International Mountain Day 2021. This year’s activities included a multi-day programme of conferences on ecotourism, mountains and water, and cultural heritage, as well as a group hike. The organization's youth chapter,  “Mountain Youth on March”,  celebrated its second anniversary. 

The Civil Coalition for Mountains in Morocco held two conferences on territorial justice and mountains in observance of International Mountain Day 2021. National Coordinator Mohammed Dich furthermore conducted interviews with newspapers, radios and the official news agency.

Mountainous areas are at high-risk today due to the climate crisis, said Gobinda Bahadur Shahi, Vice Chair of the Mountain Partnership Steering Committee and Executive Director of Karnali Integrated Rural Development and Research Centre (KIRDARC) Nepal. The world’s mountains have long attracted visitors for their scenic beauty, sports opportunities and rich cultural heritage. And for many rural mountain communities, tourism is a lifeline. It can increase household incomes, enhance job opportunities and revitalize local traditions.

The Latin American and Caribbean Network for Research and Innovation in Mountain Environments (LACMONT) held an online event in celebration of International Mountain Day 2021. 

"Bottled - Message in a Bottle" is a social networking application. One of the features of the application is a section called Adventures, where users from all over the world share interesting, educational and inspiring content on various topics. On the occasion of International Mountain Day, the application ran the theme "Glory of Mountains" for the the weekend of 11-12 December. 

In celebration of International Mountain Day, the National Institute for Research on Glaciers and Mountain Ecosystems (INAIGEM) hosted the webinar "Peru, country of mountains".

The INKAFEST Mountain Film Festival is a platform that seeks to reach the sports community and general public through film and media to raise awarness about mountains and mountain adventure sports. On 11 and 12 December 2021, the platform hosted two days of film screenings dedicated to International Mountain Day.
