The thematic areas are project tags that have been introduced into this online tool to help users refine their searches, therefore enabling them to filter for projects of interest. These allow for projects to be broken down depending on the subject they address, such as legislative strengthening, or monitoring, control and surveillance.
As there is overlap between different thematic areas and projects often cover more than one area, multiple thematic areas can be selected per project. Within certain thematic areas, sub-categories are available to further specify the typology of a project.
This is the list of thematic areas introduced and a brief description of each:
Needs Assessment
Needs Assessment
An exercise aiming to identify gaps in the framework in place to combat IUU fishing. This activity, usually conducted within the national context, covers all aspects, including legal, policy, institutional framework, and operations and procedures.
Policy development and implementation
Policy development and implementation
The review of policy at national or regional level and / or its implementation.
Legislation strengthening
Legislation strengthening
Provision of support to a State to strengthen its legislative framework, in an effort to ensure that it has the capacity and / or legal basis from which to fulfil its responsibilities as a flag, port, coastal and / or market States.
Fisheries management
Fisheries management
Any activity targeted at supporting a State to improve its fisheries management, and hence preventing, deterring or eliminating IUU fishing.
Monitoring, control and surveillance
Monitoring, control and surveillance
Activities targeted at improving a State’s MCS capacity, including through enabling use of technology and/or development of information systems, training of personnel, and the development and implementation of standard operating procedures among others.
Enforcement
Enforcement
Activities leading to improving the enforcement capacity within a country, therefore its capacity to take action in order to stop, correct and / or impose punishment, whether administrative or criminal, in cases where an action is identified or suspected to be in contravention or non-compliance with management measures. Such activities may include improving capacity to collect evidence and judiciary trainings.
Market related measures
Market related measures
Supporting the introduction or effective implementation of market related measures in a country, such as through the implementation of catch documentation schemes, in an effort to make it more difficult for fish sourced from IUU fishing activities to access the market.
Coordination / cooperation
Coordination / cooperation
Addressing coordination at the national level, such as assisting in the development or strengthening of an inter-agency coordination mechanism, or cooperation at the regional or international level with the aim of creating enabling conditions to better combat IUU fishing.
