Prioritization of Irrigation Schemes for Modernization/Rehabilitation (PRISM)

The Prioritization of Irrigation Schemes for Modernization/Rehabilitation (PRISM) tool is a web-based tool developed by the Land and Water Division of FAO to support decision-makers in planning and programming irrigation investment in line with national priorities and to guide development and vulnerability assessments as needed.

Through a clear, user-friendly interface and a wide range of highly selected indicators, the PRISM guides the investment of countries in the most vulnerable/exposed areas with the highest potential impact of project intervention. PRISM guides a sequenced and consistent strategy to prioritize irrigation investments.

The applied methodology evaluates irrigated areas defined by the user based on 16 indicators, mainly based on – raw and pre-processed – GIS data, covering an array of aspects regarding the impacts of investments and factors influencing the potential of irrigation schemes, intersecting the following 4 areas: climate change, environment, society and economy, technology.

Using a composite indicator analysis calculation scheme, indicator values are normalized and combined in a standardized manner; areas are ranked according to their final score. The results are presented on the user interface providing the user insights of the assessment and the option to export the results.
