The FAO Development Law Service highlights the importance of legal and institutional frameworks for school feeding

27/06/2023

On 6 June 2023, the Development Law Service of the FAO Legal Office (LEGN) participated in the third virtual training session for the Caribbean region, focusing on governance, policy, and legal frameworks for school feeding.

The event was organized by the Caribbean Agroeconomic Society (CAAES), in collaboration with the school feeding project of the Brazil-FAO International Cooperation Program, the Mexico-CARICOM-FAO Initiative, and in partnership with the University of the West Indies (UWI).

During the event, LEGN's Outposted Legal Officer, Manuela Cuvi, highlighted the importance of legal frameworks in relation to school feeding and how they are relevant for governments and institutions in improving school feeding programs.

Through laws, it is possible to institutionalize and establish the necessary procedures for the effective implementation of school feeding programs. Such laws enable the creation of a strong and enduring institutional framework to ensure the fulfillment of the human right of school-aged girls and boys to adequate nutrition and education, regardless of changes in government.
