FAO collaborates with PARLATINO on a model law on agroecology
FAO is providing technical legal support to the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (PARLATINO) in the creation of a regional model law on Agroecology. In 2021, released a publication titled "Legislating to Promote Agroecology in the Latin American and Caribbean Region - Guidelines for a Model Law of PARLATINO on Agroecology" (available only in Spanish) which encompassed components that could form part of a model law. Throughout that year, the publication underwent three public consultations with parliamentarians, civil society organizations, social movements, and regional organizations in Latin America and the Caribbean, to gather their contributions.
On 12 October 2023, FAO intervened before the PARLATINO Commission of Agriculture, Livestock Fisheries to share the results of this collaboration and highlight key legal challenges in implementing agroecological approaches in agrifood systems. FAO committed to continued collaboration with PARLATINO for the development of a model law in this regard. This initiative is in line with the recently approved Global Parliamentary Pact against Hunger and Malnutrition and supports the United Nations Decade of Family Farming.
