Join FAO’s Office of Climate Change, Biodiversity and Environment in celebrating

International Day for Biological Diversity

22/05/2025

The theme of this year’s Biodiversity Day is “Harmony with nature and sustainable development”

Biodiversity is at the heart of our food systems. When managed sustainably, agrifood systems offer solutions to major interconnected challenges facing people and the planet, including biodiversity loss and land degradation, food insecurity and malnutrition.

This year’s celebration highlights the interlinkages between the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF).

FAO’s mission and Strategic Framework uphold these vital agendas, which aim to ensure food security and nutrition for all, while protecting, restoring, and promoting the sustainable use of terrestrial and marine ecosystems.

More than half of the KMGBF targetsare directly connected to agrifood systems. The KMGBF provides a roadmap to advance the sustainable transformation of agrifood systems, enhancing biodiversity, ensuring food security, and improving livelihoods.

FAO’s Office of Climate Change, Biodiversity and Environment (OCB) is coordinating efforts across FAO and working with Member countries to promote agrifood systems solutions. These solutions work in harmony with nature, maximizing benefits and minimizing trade-offs across the food, biodiversity, and climate nexus.
