FAO’s Strategy and Action Plan on Mainstreaming Biodiversity across Agricultural Sectors

EN FAO Strategy on Mainstreaming Biodiversity across Agricultural Sectors

In 2019, FAO adopted its Strategy on Mainstreaming Biodiversity across Agriculture Sectors. The strategy aims to reduce the negative impacts of agriculture on biodiversity and promote sustainable agricultural practices and the conservation, enhancement, preservation and restoration of biodiversity as a whole.

The strategy focuses on the following goals:

  1. Promote sustainable use and management of biodiversity with special focus on landscape and ecosystem approaches in agricultural sectors.

  2. Conserve, enhance and restore biodiversity and ensure the continued provision of ecosystem services.

  3. Promote sustainable agriculture and food systems that integrate the conservation, recognition and promotion of biodiversity throughout value chains.

  4. Safeguard the livelihoods of small-scale producers and Indigenous Peoples and local communities as custodians of biodiversity, and emphasize the role of all relevant stakeholders as custodians of biodiversity.

The 2021–23 Action Plan for the Implementation of the Strategy sets out the concrete actions through which FAO is operationalizing the strategy.

Actions are implemented to achieve the following outcomes:

  1. Support provided to Members, at their request, to enhance their capacity to mainstream biodiversity.

  2. Biodiversity mainstreamed across FAO’s policies, programmes and activities.

  3. Role of biodiversity and its ecosystem services for food security and nutrition globally recognized.

  4. Coordination and delivery of FAO’s work on biodiversity strengthened.
