In Mozambique, fish production in general has declined over the last decade, mainly due high input costs, poor production techniques, limited extension services, poor market access and application.

One of the approaches promoted by the Government to reverse this trend is to increase fish production and productivity through aquaculture, given the high potential, good climate, abundant water sources and accessible markets.

Through this context FAO is supporting the new aquaculture project in Inhambane province for two years, which will benefit individual or grouped producers in associations and / or aquaculture cooperatives of that province.
This FAO action has as its main objective the promotion of sustainable development, socially inclusive, equitable and environmentally responsible for aquaculture.

Therefore, the project will provide a training programme for extension services, while supporting selected producers with potential to develop aquaculture enterprises commercially viable in order to increase fish production and productivity, add value, increasing employment and consequently household income.

The project will be implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of the Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries.
This is an action that is part of promoting the Sustainable Development Objectives (Goal 14) for "Life on Water", which advocates the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
