National Agriculture Show highlights the role of smallholder farmers in sustaining food systems
Abuja - The National Agricultural Show 2021 was held in Nasarawa state, as part of the celebrations to mark the World Food Day, state with the main theme being the recognition of smallholder farmers in sustaining food systems.
The weeklong event was opened by the Federal Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Mohammed Mahmood Abubakar. FAO was represented by the Team Leader of the Emergence Centre for Transboundary Diseases (ECTAD), Guy Kouame on behalf of FAO Representative in Nigeria and to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Mr. Fred Kafeero.
Hon. Dr. Abubakar disclosed that the Government had set aside 600 billion to support farmers across the country through zero interest monetary incentives in order to expand productivity for domestic consumption and export.
The event attracted attendance of hundreds of farmers, farming inputs manufacturers and dealers, development partners, development partners and members of the general public.
At the closing of the National Agriculture Show, the Chairman Senate Committee on Agriculture Senator, Abdullahi Adam, commended FAO for the demonstrated commitment to the development of the agricultural sector in Nigeria and supporting the annual show.
FAO’s Fred Kafeero said targeted interventions to make farming more technologically advanced, innovation in digital agriculture and literacy improvement among women would usher in the desired results.
