FAO LEAP at the COP26

28/10/2021

The COP 26 UN Climate Change Conference hosted by the UK in partnership with Italy, is taking place from 31 October to 12 November 2021 in the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) in Glasgow, UK.

Methane emissions from livestock is central at the COP 26discussions and more countries are joining the Global Methane Pledge, led by the United States of America and the European Union, to slash methane emissions by 30% by 2030.

The FAO Livestock Environmental Assessment and Performance (LEAP) Partnershipis conducting a comprehensive study to evaluate methane sources in agriculture, discussing soundness and fitness for purpose of climate change metrics, methane sources and sinks and mitigation strategies. Besides, the FAO LEAP Partnership has developed guidelines to assess the environmental impacts of livestock systems on climate change, biodiversity, water use, soil carbon, and those tied to nitrogen and phosphorus use.

In line with this, FAO LEAP partnership is convening a 1h15’ virtual side event on Wednesday, 3 November, 2021 starting at 11:30GMT±0. Entitled “Accelerating climate action in the livestock sector: opportunities across different systems” the event aims to share knowledge on livestock based methane assessment and climate solutions.

The event will call for greater collaboration in the livestock sector in order to cope with the climate change challenges and promote healthy ecosystems. This will be through the showcase of the upcoming phase of the FAO LEAP Partnership as well as the recentlypublished catalogue of applications showcasing evidence-based solutions and best practices on climate change, soil carbon storage, grassland management, water productivity and biodiversity.

Among the tentative list of speakers at the event include Ms. Marie-Claude Bibeau,Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Canada; Mr. Frans Timmermans, European Commission Director General Climate action( CLIMA); Ms. Sandra Vijn, World Wide Fund (WWF) International;  Mr. Tim McAllister, LEAP Chair; Mr. Hsin Huang, International Meat Secretariat; Ms. Caroline Emond, International Dairy Federation; Ms. Shirley Tarawali, Chair of Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock (GASL) and Ms. Michelle Cain, Cranfield University U.K.
