Launch of public review: Methane emissions in livestock and rice systems

13/10/2022

Today the FAO Livestock Environmental Assessment and Performance (LEAP) Partnership launched the public review of the FAO LEAP guidelines on Methane emissions in livestock and rice systems: Sources, quantification, mitigation and metrics.

The public review starts on 13 October and close on 20 November 2022. It is open to all institutions, experts, scientists, and any other stakeholders with the aim to strengthen the consensus built so far and ensure the technical quality of this report.

The FAO LEAP Technical Advisory Group on Methane will process and respond to all comments received. The final rebuttal report will be published on the FAO LEAP website to ensure transparency of the development process.

About this document

In January 2021, the FAO LEAP Partnership launched a technical advisory group on methane with the aim to develop a comprehensive review and analysis of sources and sinks of methane (CH4 ) in agrifood systems. The group also considered existing and innovative mitigation solutions and metrics to quantify the impacts of CH4 emissions on climate.

The core-drafting group included more than 60 international scientists, stakeholders and experts on methane sources and sinks, quantification, mitigations and metrics. This draft report provides comprehensive scientific information that different stakeholders – including public and private sector, non-states entities, and producers’ organizations – can use to design and implement technical mitigation strategies and programmes to cut CH4 emissions in livestock and rice systems. Methane mitigation actions are crucial to achieve the Paris Agreement goals and support the efforts made within the context of the Global Methane Pledge.
