Interagency port inspection training for those involved in PSMA implementation in Suriname

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) organised a training course for thirty-two officers from the key administrations involved in port inspections and related activities in Suriname.

The course was held in Paramaribo between 9-13 May 2022.

The training course covered port inspection preparation, port inspection activities and post-inspection follow up and enforcement, and was given through a series of theoretical lectures, a field visit to three ports, and a number of practical exercises. The training modules covered included fisheries management; monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS); the 2009 FAO Agreement on Port State Measures (PSMA); and enforcement.

This training is part of the Global Capacity Development Programme implemented by FAO under the PSMA and was the final activity under the ‘Technical assistance for sustainable fisheries practices’, a Technical Cooperation (TC) funded under the regional sustainable fishery project (RG-T3162) of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
