EU Commissioner and Spanish Minister address participants of FAO course
The EU Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis, and Spain’s Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, visited the INTERMARES, Spain’s fisheries cooperation training ship, currently docked in the Port of Vigo.
Their visit coincided with the FAO Advanced International Course on Fisheries Monitoring, Control and Surveillance (MCS), currently held on board as part of the FAO’s Global Training Programme in support of the international instruments to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. The course brings together 34 national fisheries officers from 12 Latin American countries.
This is the fifth time that a FAO International training course is held in the Vigo Training Hub, having provided training to around one hundred national officers from Africa, Caribbean, and Latin America thus far.
When addressing authorities and participants of the MCS training course, both Commissioner Kadis and Minister Planas praised FAO’s efforts in promoting training initiatives that support biologically, environmentally, and socioeconomically sustainable fisheries, while reinforcing the global fight against IUU fishing.
FAO provides an intensive Global Training Programme which contributes to national, regional, and global efforts to combat IUU fishing, offering specialized courses with a combination of modules, including theoretical and practical sessions.
