REDD+ strategic documents
FAO, in collaboration with partners, supports development of REDD+ readiness preparation proposals (R-PP), REDD+ national strategies or action plans, and REDD+ national investment plans. For more information, see REDD+ Implementation Actions.
Identifying and prioritizing REDD+ actions can vary by country and is led by government institutions. Steps can include:
- identify, assess and prioritize all drivers of deforestation and forest degradation, as well as opportunities for – and barriers to – conservation, management and enhancement of forest carbon stocks;
- map, stratify, and classify ecosystems by land use, tenure and institutional regime;
- map land-conversion trends (e.g. deforestation, degradation, restoration and reforestation) for each ecosystem class;
- define and prioritize main REDD+ intervention areas and their scale, based on their potential to contribute to climate change mitigation (e.g. community-managed miombo woodlands based largely in south-central Africa and, where charcoal production drives most deforestation);
- assess social and environmental benefits and risks of the REDD+ actions to ensure appropriate REDD+ safeguards are in place.
These steps require engagement of all relevant stakeholders. FAO supports countries in ensuring multi-stakeholder processes, including participatory dialogue and decision-making. Existing national platforms may be used or FAO can work with the particular country to map out stakeholders and help with the engagement process.
