The United Nations has declared 2014 the International Year of Family Farming to raise the profile of smallholder family farmers who have an often-undervalued role to play in ensuring global food security. In many parts of the world, family run farms are the predominant form of agricultural production. FAO is supporting these family farmers, not only in terms of improving their production techniques and yield, but also by helping them gain access to finance and markets. One example of this can be seen in Swaziland where the marketing initiative of the Swaziland Agricultural Development Programme, led by the government with assistance from the European Union and FAO, is helping farmers.
