Global Ghost Gear Initiative Strategic Partner to the IMO-FAO GloLitter Partnerships Project

04/01/2021

The Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI) will continue the fruitful collaboration with FAO through the IMO-FAO GloLitter Partnerships (GLP) project in their efforts to prevent and reduce abandoned, lost and otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG).

GGGI, as Strategic Partner to GLP, will bring their experience and comprehensive network to facilitate the implementation of the global components of the project.

The GGGI is the only cross-sectoral alliance dedicated to solving the problem of ALDFG worldwide.

Launched in 2015 and part of Ocean Conservancy since 2019, the GGGI brings together more than 100 stakeholder groups, including 17 national governments as well as representatives from civil society, the private sector, public agencies, academia, intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), and others from across the fishing industry to tackle ghost gear at a global scale.

In 2017 GGGI supported the development of the FAO Voluntary Guidelines for the Marking of Fishing Gear (VGMFG), which were adopted in 2018.

During 2019, GGGI worked with FAO to implement a series of capacity-building workshops with stakeholders in priority regions using the gear management principals and case studies outlined in the GGGI Best Practice Framework and VGMFG.
