This project aimed to strengthen Syria’s agricultural extension system and transform it into a more market-oriented, farmer-centred advisory service capable of supporting rural livelihoods in a context of protracted crisis, climate-related challenges, and growing food insecurity. Implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform (MAAR), the project sought to assess the current status and capacities of public extension services, develop a renewed vision for market-oriented rural advisory services, and enhance the skills of extension workers to provide both technical and farm-business guidance to small-scale producers.

Through institutional assessments, capacity development programmes, training on market-oriented advisory approaches, and the rollout of Farm Business Schools (FBS), the project aimed to equip extension personnel with the knowledge, tools, and methodologies needed to improve farmers’ productivity, profitability, and resilience. The initiative also supported the modernization of extension tools and communication systems, fostering stronger linkages between farmers, markets, and innovation actors. By strengthening the responsiveness and effectiveness of extension services, the project ultimately contributed to improved food security, sustainable agricultural development, and enhanced income opportunities for small-scale farmers across Syria. 

Objectives

It supported institutional modernization, enhanced extension workers' technical and business skills, and improved farmers' access to knowledge, innovation and market opportunities.
