Introduction The project promotes farmers' markets as drivers of inclusive and resilient agrifood systems. Through the Food Coalition, it strengthens farmers' market organizations, improves market access for small-scale producers, generates global knowledge and supports policies that foster sustainable local food systems.
Country Ghana
Start date 25/08/2025
End date 31/08/2026
Status Ongoing
Recipient / Target Areas Ghana
Budget USD 30000
Project Code TCP/GHA/4004/C3
Objective / Goal

This initiative aims to strengthen farmers markets in Northern regions of Ghana as a pathway to improving market access, reducing post-harvest losses, and enhancing the livelihoods of smallholder farmers. Implemented in collaboration with the University of Cape Coast and national stakeholders, the project maps and assesses farmers markets, generating evidence on their structure, operations, and contribution to sustainable food systems.

The findings will support evidence-based policymaking, targeted investments, and the development of more inclusive market models aligned with Ghana’s agricultural transformation agenda. In addition, the project will build the capacities of farmers markets’ stakeholders through training on the FAO approach Farm Business School Forward, strengthening farm business management skills and enabling producers to participate more effectively in and benefit from farmers markets.

Objectives

The project aims to strengthen farmers' markets and collective market mechanisms that improve opportunities for small-scale producers. It supports research, policy dialogue, capacity development and technical assistance while strengthening links between producers and consumers and promoting more resilient, inclusive and sustainable agrifood systems.
