EXPLORE THE FAO Soil and Land legacy maps

The FAO Land and Water Division is committed to making data and information on soil and land heritage available to its users. These are historical paper maps produced over the past century by FAO with the relevant contribution of national authorities. Out the approximately 5,000 paper maps archived at FAO-HQ, the related metadata are now accessible in this catalog in a standard format for consultation. Furthermore, a significant number of them (~1,200) were selected by a team of experts for scanning in order to preserve a digital copy of the original data, associated with the relevant metadata. Please note: the digital maps are in JPF format, and are not geo-referenced.

This point dataset shows wihch locations across the globe are represented by the FAO historical maps, indicating how many digital maps are available for download in each country. Please note that the point coordinates are randomly distributed whithin the national boundaries, therefore they do not correspond to the location of the data in the associated map.

The maps are available for the following countries: Afghanistan, Algeria, Angola, Argentina, Bangladesh, Benin, Bolivia, Burundi, Botswana, Brazil, British Guiana, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Chile, China, Colombia, Comoros, Congo, Ivory Coast, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Ethiopia, French Guiana, Gabon, Gambia, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Jamaica, Japan, Korea, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Mozambique, Namibia, Nicaragua, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Swaziland, Syria, Taiwan, Tanzania, Thailand, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Uruguay, Venezuela, Vietnam, Zambia, Zimbabwe
